There had been a lot of confusion as to when exactly Sandro Tonali would be available to play again for Newcastle United.

It was universally agreed that the ten months suspension would expire towards the end of August 2024 – but which date exactly?

The match against Tottenham on Sunday 1 September was definitely the first Premier League match that Sandro Tonali could take part in.

So the big debate surrounded whether or not he could play in the Carabao Cup second round match. The Italian FA appearing to indicate not, that the suspension wouldn’t have expired in time, whilst the official NUFC site looked to show that Sandro Tonali WOULD be able to play in this late-August cup match.

Now we have had a definitive confirmation on Thursday morning…

Newcastle United official announcement – 15 August 2024:

‘We can announce that Sandro Tonali will return to selection on Wednesday, 28 August following the conclusion of his ten-month ban from competitive football.’

Newcastle United were ball number 15 last night and play Nottingham Forest away in the second round.

The second round ties, including Newcastle at the City Ground, will be played the week commencing Monday 26 August.

Newcastle United play at Bournemouth on Sunday 25 August, which means NUFC won’t be asked to play on Tuesday, that then allowing Sandro Tonali to feature against Forest in the cup. Something which you imagine will have been Eddie Howe’s ideal plan, a softer introduction where the NUFC boss would have been looking to make changes to his team, use his squad and bring Tonali back in, likely as a starter.
