Newcastle United may face the very real prospect of having to sell key striker Callum Wilson this summer in order to keep in line with Financial Fair Play regulations.
The Magpies have spent big under their wealthy Saudi owners, but FFP means they have to be able to show they’re balancing their books, as we’ve already seen Everton and Nottingham Forest hit with points deductions this season.
Newcastle may now have to cash in on several first-team players this summer, with speculation doing the rounds for some time that Bruno Guimaraes could be one big name to leave St James’ Park.
On top of that, pundit Tony Cascarino suspects that Wilson may also be an obvious candidate for the exit door.
Callum Wilson in action for Newcastle United
Wilson transfer discussed by Cascarino
Cascarino said: “Sometimes you just have to move people on. That’s what Liverpool did with Jordan Henderson, James Milner. They get to a certain stage and even though they love them they still move them on.
“I think Newcastle might have to do similar things. I really like Callum Wilson, he’s really good and always reliable, but I would probably move on from him in the summer.”
Newcastle fans might not be too happy about this, but Cascarino is right that the player’s age surely means it makes sense at this stage.
