The NFL season is back, and fans are once again glued to the action on the gridiron. With stiff competition week after week, the Denver Broncos vs. Seattle Seahawks game offered up plenty of exciting moments. One particular tackle stood out, not just for its intensity, but for its resemblance to a pro wrestling move. However, the announcer’s botched call on the play stole some of the spotlight.
During a crucial point in the game, a player delivered a tackle that saw the runner go end-over-end, flipping onto the field in dramatic fashion. For wrestling fans, the move looked almost like something out of a WWE match, almost like a Panama Sunrise. The commentator seized the opportunity to make a lighthearted comparison, but unfortunately, it didn’t go as planned.
“That looked like Jimmy, you know WWF suplex. Jimmy ‘Superfly’ Snuka or Ricky The Steamboat Dragon with the suplex.”
It’s important to remember that NFL commentators aren’t trained in the intricacies of wrestling. They might not know the difference between a backdrop and a suplex, or even what a Panama Sunrise actually entails. But, credit where it’s due, because at least they made the effort to reference some wrestling legends, even if the names weren’t quite right.
The tackle itself was an impressive feat of athleticism, and the comparison to a wrestling move wasn’t entirely off. The player deserved credit for the creative takedown, even if the commentary didn’t match the execution. It’s not every day that you see wrestling moves on the football field, and fans certainly took notice.
While the NFL and WWE may be very different worlds, moments like these show just how much crossover appeal both sports have, even if the references don’t always land perfectly.
Ringside News will be keeping an eye on this story, especially if the video goes viral. Who knows, maybe we’ll even get a response from Ricky Steamboat himself. Sadly, Jimmy Snuka is no longer with us to hear his name called out during an NFL Sunday broadcast, but the wrestling community will always keep his legacy alive.
What’s your take on this clip? Do other sports sort of talk down to pro wrestling sometimes? Let us know what you think in the comments section!
