Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan, singer Lily Allen and TV host Rylan Clark feature on one of the starriest BBC podcast slates to date.

Ireland-born actress Coughlan is hosting a spin-off of History’s Secret Heroes titled History’s Youngest Heroes. From Nelson Mandela to Audrey Hepburn, the Derry Girls breakout will share jaw-dropping tales of heroism, deception, and acts of bravery and resistance.

Fear singer Allen is partnering with her old friend, the presenter Miquita Oliver, on Miss Me?, in which the lifelong pals will get together twice a week for transatlantic catch-ups (Allen lives in the States) discussing pop culture, politics, music and more.

Notably, the show is the debut BBC commission for News Agents podcast producer Persephonica, which is run by the BBC’s Brexitcast creator Dino Sofos.

“Lily and Miquita have defined pop culture,” said Sofos. “Our listeners have grown up with them – on their screens and soundtracking their lives. Now we’re letting listeners eavesdrop on their hilariously honest conversations.”

Also on the slate, Clark will host How To Be In The Spotlight [working title], setting out to explore what it means to be famous in a series of one-on-one interviews with a host of well-known faces who reveal the true cost of living life under a lens. The former X Factor star recently opened up to The Guardian about his experience on the show, during which fellow contestant Lucy Spraggan was raped in a hotel room.

The BBC has also greenlit a podcast about TV titled Off the Telly with Natalie Cassidy and Joanna Page, and a series about Avril Lavigne hosted by comedian Joanne McNally.

“These fantastic new voices will welcome listeners with funny, fresh and insightful perspectives,” said Heidi Dawson, Controller for BBC Radio 5 Live. “These new titles will provide even more choice for our new audiences and we can’t wait for you to discover your new favourite podcast.”
