Nigel McGuinness cannot take credit for one of his funniest lines on commentary.
Since debuting for AEW on the first episode of AEW Collision, Nigel McGuinness has been a constant thorn in Bryan Danielson’s side. He plays on their decades-long rivalry, going back to their legendary rivalry in Ring of Honor.
He has levied a series of insults at Danielson while on commentary. Nigel McGuinness commonly calls the American Dragon a “clam digger” while also mocking his recent injury record.
One of his funniest lines was referencing Bryan Danielson’s wife, the former Brie Bella. He quipped, “Bryan used to be vegan, but he couldn’t give up eating Brie”. It was a clever play on words, but Nigel McGuinness revealed on Insight with Chris Van Vliet that he got the joke from social media… and claims it was actually about cheese.
He added that he had to run the joke past AEW announcer Bobby Cruise. Nigel McGuinness noted that Cruise is a good barometer of what jokes are appropriate or not.
“I wish I could take credit for that one, Christopher, but unfortunately no. The beauty of social media—I think someone must have posted it on Twitter about a year or so ago, something like that. I thought, ‘That sounds like a fun line.’ I wasn’t sure whether I could use it because, you know, they had a lot of lines that I always run by Bobby Cruise before the show because he’s a good sort of barometer of whether this is politically correct enough or not. And that one got through the ‘Cruise-ometer.'”
“I was talking about cheese, exactly. You know, there were some upset people in France, but you can’t please everyone.”
