A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday evening in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, as Mikail Osundiji, a sales representative reportedly working with Nestle Plc, collapsed and passed away while watching the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations between Nigeria and South Africa.

The 43-year-old, said to be from Okuku in Osun State, succumbed to a suspected heavy shock after the referee disallowed Nigeria’s second goal against South Africa, scored by Victor Osimhen. Confirming the unfortunate event, Osundiji’s colleague at Nestle Plc, Akinbami Michael, expressed, “Yes, it is true, we lost Mikail Osundiji on Wednesday night while watching Nigeria and South Africa AFCON semi-finals match. He must have died out of shock.”

Described as a devoted Nigerian patriot, Osundiji was buried on Thursday afternoon according to Islamic rites. He leaves behind a wife and two children, aged 12 and 7 respectively.

According to Mrs. Adetunji Nofisat, the elder sister of the deceased, Osundiji showed no signs of illness before attending the football viewing center located at the Federal Housing Estate, Olomoore axis of Abeokuta to watch the match. She recounted the sudden turn of events, explaining how he collapsed after the referee’s decision, and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In the wake of this tragedy, Nofisat appealed to the state Governor, Dapo Abiodun, for assistance, particularly in the form of scholarships for Osundiji’s children to ensure they complete their education.

The passing of Mikail Osundiji marks a somber moment, reminding us of the unexpected twists of fate that life can bring, even amidst moments of leisure and joy.
