The United States National Academy of Medicine has elected Nigerian medical doctor Toyin Ajayi as one of its 90 regular members.

Ajayi, a US-based Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Cityblock Health in Brooklyn, New York, has gained global recognition as a pioneer in primary care, focused on improving outcomes for low-income populations.

The Academy revealed that her initiative has also provided assistance to marginalised individuals with complex health and social needs.

In a statement on its website last week, NAM disclosed that the election also included 10 international members. It stated that being elected to the Academy is considered one of the highest honours in the fields of health and medicine.

“It recognises individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service,” NAM stated.

Meanwhile, another US-based Nigerian physician, Dr Kojo Elenitoba-Johnson, was inducted into the NAM.

This was announced by the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, on Monday.

She congratulated Elenitoba-Johnson, describing the honour as “a demonstration of his outstanding professional achievement and unwavering commitment to service in the medical field.”

Elenitoba-Johnson is a pathologist in New York and is affiliated with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre.
