NiMet’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has announced that it will unveil its 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
Themed ‘The Role of Early Warnings towards a Climate Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development’, the presentation will provide critical climate-related forecasts for the year.
A statement on Monday by the agency noted that in line with its mandate to advise the government and public on weather, climate, and water-related matters, NiMet annually predicts and publishes climatic patterns, including rainfall and temperature, in the first quarter of each year.
Speaking about the upcoming event, NiMet’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, explained the significance of the SCP document.
He said, “The Seasonal Climate Prediction highlights vital Weather and Climate information that may affect socio-economic activities in the following sectors during the year: Agriculture, Aviation, Disaster Risk Management, Health, Oil & Gas, Telecommunication, Tourism, Transport (Water and Land), Power (hydro and renewable), Water Resources Management, etc.”
Prof. Anosike further emphasised the importance of the SCP in addressing the needs of various sectors, adding, “The socioeconomic implications of the expected rainfall and temperature patterns for some sectors of the economy are also presented in the publication.”
The 2025 SCP will feature detailed forecasts, including the onset and cessation dates of the rainy season, the length of the cropping season, the expected total rainfall in all 774 Local Government Areas, temperature projections from January to May, and vigilance forecasts for malaria and meningitis.
Acoording to the statement, the SCP document is considered a national resource and its presentation attracts stakeholders from public and private sectors, development partners, non-governmental organisations, the diplomatic community, and farmer associations, among others.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN, is expected to perform the official presentation.
The event will also include the launch of a summary document for policymakers and translations of the SCP into three major Nigerian languages, as well as a report on the State of the Climate in Nigeria.
