The National Media Commission (NMC) has inaugurated a seven-member Volta Region Media Advisory Committee (MAC) with the objective to ensure that journalists and other media practitioners carried out their duties responsibility and uphold professional standards.
Chaired by the Bishop of Ho Catholic Dioceses, Most Revered Emmanuel Kofi Fianu, the MAC is to also ensure public trust among media practitioners in the region.
The members include the former Rector of Ho Technical University, Dr George Mawusi Afeti, a Registrar of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ms Yaa Opuni Amankwa, and Mr Bruce Senam Mac Brinn, an educationist.
The rest are Mr N.K.K Gidiglo, Mr Anthony Kafui Kanyi Bells, a journalist and former Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association and Mr Andrews Dodzi Adugu, a High Court Judge.
The Chairman of the NMC, Mr Yaw Boadu Ayeboafoh, who inaugurated the committee, said the new committee would play vital roles in ensuring that journalists and other media practitioners carried out their duties responsibility by adhering to professional code of ethics in the discharge of their duties.
He said it was important for the media to be fair, objective, accurate and timely in carrying out their work to enable the public to appreciate their work thereby building public confidence in the media.
The Executive Secretary of the NMC, Mr George Sarpong, lauded the Ministry of Finance for the interest shown in the activities of the commission as well as the support given to it to carry out its programmes and activities.
He stressed the need for the MAC to ensure that journalists and other media practitioners did not use abusive language particularly on radio, which would inflame passion and disturb the peace being enjoyed in the country.
He said the work of the MAC was crucial because as the country prepares for the December polls, misinformation and disinformation would be on the increase and that the committee needed to work hard to prevent such practices.
The Volta Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr Eric Kofi Dzakpasu, announced that his outfit would start the exhibition of the voters register next Tuesday.
He, therefore, called on Ghanaians to take advantage of the opportunity to check their names and make necessary corrections including removing names of people who died.
The Chairman of the MAC, Most Revered Fianu, promised on behalf of the members of the committee that they would work hard to promote the work of the media in the region.
He called for collaboration and support to enable the committee to deliver on its mandate.
