Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas
Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the state’s free and compulsory education policy, emphasising that the initiative remains a cornerstone of his administration’s vision for future development.
Speaking during a meeting with public school principals and head teachers at the Jolly Nyame Stadium Gym Hall in Jalingo on Monday, the governor declared that his government would not reverse the policy, describing education as vital for progress across all sectors.
Governor Kefas disclosed that his administration is on track as it is set to distribute over 100,000 school uniforms, bags, sandals, and other learning materials to students across the state.
He urged teachers to maintain close communication with parents to ensure that all children are enrolled in Taraba schools, as part of efforts to fully implement the free education policy.
The governor also addressed the welfare of teachers, announcing that plans were underway to promote deserving teachers.
As a result, he instructed the state’s Ministry of Education to establish a committee to evaluate the matter and present recommendations. Additionally, he assured that all outstanding salary arrears for teachers would be paid before the end of the year, while also hinting at a possible review of the running costs for schools.
“We are working tirelessly with the Civil Defence Service to secure our schools and create a safe environment for learning,” Kefas said.
Dr. Augustina Godwin, the Commissioner for Education, hailed the governor’s initiatives, noting that his leadership strides have transformed Taraba from being educationally disadvantaged to becoming competitive in the national education landscape.
She attributed the increase in school enrollment across the state to the free and compulsory education policy and urged the Kefas to expedite action on the implementation of promotions for teachers to further boost their morale.
Mrs. Rabi Samuel, the Acting Chairperson of the Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board, and Mrs. Elizabeth Zakaria Yoruta, Acting Executive Secretary of the Taraba State Post Primary School Management Board, echoed similar sentiments.
They acknowledged the governor’s impact in revitalising the education sector and noted the renewed dedication and enthusiasm among teachers in response to his efforts.
The event featured performances by the Taraba State Art Council and local musicians, marking a cultural celebration of the state’s progress in education.
Arewa PUNCH reports that with Kefa’s continued focus on education and the ongoing support of his administration, Taraba State is positioning itself as a model for free and compulsory education in Nigeria.
