Credit to WWEAbdicating? There have been countless names throughout WWE history with several people being around for long stretches of time. These are names you will regularly see on television in a variety of roles and it can be a big deal when one of them steps away from the company. That appears to be the case again, as a long time legend’s time with WWE has come to an end.

According to PWInsider.com, WWE Hall Of Famer Jerry Lawler’s broadcasting contract has expired and he was not offered a new deal. However, he is still signed to a Legends deal. Lawler has been part of the company under a talent contract for over thirty years, save for most of 2001. Lawler is believed to be someone that the Vince McMahon regime would have protected and kept around, but that is not the case under the new ownership. Should he want to, Lawler is free to sign elsewhere if he chooses to do so.

Opinion: It really is a new era and that is almost hard to fathom. At the end of the day, while Lawler would have likely been kept around in some way, even on a token contract, under McMahon, that is not going to be the case again. Eventually the new ownership will likely have their own such protected stars, but that is not the case with some of the familiar names from WWE’s history.
