The North-Central Development Agenda has urged state governors to ensure the judicious and effective utilisation of post-subsidy removal funds to alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerians.

The call was made in a statement issued on Wednesday by the group’s leader, Ademu Musa Adams, who commended President Bola Tinubu’s initiatives to cushion the effects of subsidy removal through strategic measures aimed at improving public welfare.

Adams highlighted the economic challenges Nigerians are currently enduring but expressed optimism that the reforms will yield positive results in the long run.

“The reforms being pushed through the Nigerian economy by President Tinubu may indeed be painful at this material moment, but it remains our unwavering faith that the fruits will soon begin to bear on the tree of our nationhood,” Adams said.

He lauded the Federal Government for involving state governors in the distribution and management of funds aimed at cushioning the impact of subsidy removal, describing it as a step in the right direction.

“The initiative by Mr. President to centrally involve state governors in the measures to cushion the effects of post-subsidy removal on Nigerians is most welcome. If properly managed, it should anchor the federal government-driven public welfare schemes, targeting, in a deliberate and direct manner, ordinary Nigerians through cash transfers and student loans, among other measures,” he added.

Adams also called on the governors to remain transparent in the disbursement of the funds, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the welfare of the masses.

“At this stage, we add our voice to the call on state governors to judiciously utilize the huge post-subsidy removal funds which the Tinubu Presidency is making available to them, to make life bearable for ordinary Nigerians in their various states,” the statement read.

He also noted that the North-Central region remains the most peaceful in the country and reiterated the group’s call for the establishment of a North-Central Development Commission to ensure equitable development across all geopolitical zones.

“The creation of a Development Commission will bring out the strengths of the people of the North-Central region and consolidate its role as the fulcrum of the Nigerian Federation,” Adams stated.

The group acknowledged the initial hardships brought about by the subsidy removal but praised the government’s courage in implementing the reforms.

“As Mr. President has said several times, the measures he took were inevitable, with the country’s economy having been subjected to injurious decay through one successive administration to another before his coming. It was a matter of courage to take those steps to begin to turn things around,” Adams concluded.

The N-CDA urged Nigerians to exercise patience and support the government’s efforts to rebuild the economy while calling on leaders to act in the best interest of the people.
