EXCLUSIVE: Peter Chernin’s The North Road Company is heading to Brazil for its latest international co-pro.
The company is teaming with Spiral International and Boutique Films on medical thriller series Suture, which has landed at Prime Video in Latin America and Portugal and will be unveiled at MIPCOM next week. North Road retains the rights to produce an English-language version.
From International Emmy winner Zasha Robles, Suture tells the story of Ícaro, an upstanding medical student barred from his residency program due to college debts, and Dr. Mancini, a brilliant surgeon plagued by hand tremors who yearns to return to the operating table. Left with no other recourse, the two must become doctors for a criminal organization, leading them down a treacherous path of double lives from which escape may prove impossible.
North Road said the series will feature “several of Brazil’s most prominent actors” including Cláudia Abreu, Humberto Morais, Juliana Paiva, and Danilo Mesquita. It was screened privately at the recent Iberseries in Madrid and will be shown to buyers on October 22 in Cannes. Rights are up for grabs beyond Lat Am and Portugal.
Suture is the latest international co-pro for North Road, following two Israeli shows – another recently-announced medical thriller, Heart of a Killer, starring Tehran’s Niv Sultan, and Bad Boy from Euphoria creator Ron Leshem. The outfit recently hired former Channel 4 drama boss Caroline Hollick in the London office as SVP International Production and Development.
North Road’s Jan Frouman and Amy Israel serve as EPs on Suture, with Robles producing and show-running, together with Boutique Filmes’ Gustavo Mello.
Frouman said: “This is an extremely exciting project, perfectly suited to North Road’s goal of continuing to expand its involvement in premium series with world-class talent around the world. I look forward to a productive showing at MIPCOM, as we bring this thrilling story to global audiences.”
Robles added: “Suture is a dynamic medical thriller with an exceptional cast, gripping episodes, and an ongoing story that grabs you and won’t let go—all set in the amazing São Paulo.”
