Released on June 27, Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD is impressing fans not just in India but globally too. While the dystopian sci-fi epic – starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan in lead roles, is being loved by millions, others cannot help but point out the similarities they see between it and different Hollywood films. From Harry Potter to Iron Man, Star Wars and more, audiences are drawing parallels between Kalki and Hollywood flicks. During a recent chat, the film’s director got candid about which H-wood films were actually an inspiration for Kalki.
Kalki is influenced by GOTG, not Iron Man
During a recent interview with Zoom, director Nag Ashwin got candid about which Hollywood movies influenced Kalki 2898 AD. When asked if Marvel’s Iron Man franchise was an inspiration for the Prabhas starrer, the director said, “We grew up watching Marvel films. I would say Guardians of the Galaxy was more of an influence than Iron Man. Definitely, Star Wars is a huge influence. I love Star Wars, so that is subconsciously a part of my aesthetic.” He added that Harshith Reddy’s character Luke – a rebel from Shambhala, was inspired by the popular Star Wars character, Luke Skywalker.
Kalki’s Supreme Yaskin isn’t influenced by Harry Potter
During the same conversation, Nag denied Harry Potter being an inspiration. There have been speculations that Kamal Haasan’s look as Supreme Yaskin was allegedly modelled on Lord Voldemort. He said, “Our references were these old Tibetan monks, who are supposed to be 120-130 years old. Sir (Kamal Haasan) was always mentioning the portrait of Dorian Grey (from Oscar Wilde’s 1890 philosophical novel The Picture of Dorian Grey). That was sir’s inspiration. We didn’t have many movie references for that ancient look.” Nag added.
He added that the only Harry Potter reference in Kalki 2898 AD may be Vinay Kumar’s character Sirius, inspired by the HP character Sirius Black.
