The Nigeria Police Trust Fund has decried the deplorable state of the Police Training School in Nonwa, Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State, describing it as a disaster.

The Executive Secretary of the NPTF, Mohammed Sheidu, made this statement on Wednesday when he led the top management team, alongside the House of Representatives Committee on Police Affairs, on a visit to assess the condition of the school.

Sheidu called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency at the training school, which he said houses some uninhabitable structures in a sorry environment.

He, however, assured that urgent steps would be taken to refurbish the institution, pointing out that the current state of dilapidation would affect future postings of new recruits to Rivers State.

Sheidu expressed: “We came to check the training facilities of the Nigeria Police Force Training School. We are going across the nation to assess facilities, including medical and training amenities.

“And Rivers State, from my surprise with the current recruitment that was going on in the Police, was not training any officers. So, I said it was necessary that we come here ourselves to see the state of affairs regarding what is happening in the training facilities.

“We are going to look at what we can do. As an intervention agency, our role is to come into situations like this and see how we can facilitate and bring it back into a condition that is able to train officers and youths, and engage more people in the Police Force, especially in an area in the South-South.

“It is a disaster. It is very important that something that is an emergency (a state of emergency) should be declared here in Rivers State, especially concerning the training facilities that we have come here to examine today.”

Similarly, the Chairman of the House Committee on Police Affairs, Makki Abubakar, expressed concerns about the deplorable state of the school.

He assured that meaningful and urgent steps would be taken by the House of Representatives to address the challenges.
