Nuno watched on as Newcastle United took the lead after only 18 seconds through Joe Willock.

Another flowing move should have given United a 2-0 lead but after great work from Willock and Isak, Sandro Tonali just missed out on a dream goal on his return, as the keeper made a good one on one save.

Forest worked their way back into the match and equalised, when their latest long throw into the box five minutes after half time fell kindly for them.

However, Forest given a helping hand when the referee had failed to give a foul against Anderson when he stood on Isak’s foot, so United down to 10 men when the equaliser went in, as Isak had to stay off for the regulation 30 seconds after treatment.

In the end of course it all came down to penalties.

As Nuno explains, practice doesn’t always make perfect…

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo reflects on Wednesday’s Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle United:

“It was a setback to concede in the first minute but the reaction was good.

“We had good spells against a good team.

“We had a lot of chances but not the final shot.

“The finishing was missing but overall good to see.

“We practice penalties a lot, a lot, a lot!

“We prepared but then it comes to the competition…

“It was a good moment for them (the players who came into the team) to show we have solutions.

“It is important we realise we have solutions.

“We could be more balanced.

“But moving forward we have more options and solutions because we have a hard task ahead of us.”
