The champ is here!
O’Shea Jackson Jr. appeared on Artist Friendly with Joel Madden, who brought up his pro wrestling fandom during the conversation. Jackson, star of Den Of Thieves and host of the No-Contest Wrestling Podcast, mentioned that he had a belt with him. Jackson uses the titles as a source of motivation, crediting his mother for sparking the idea.
“I started watching on a weekly basis in ’99-2000 and just really haven’t looked back. The reason why I happen to have a wrestling belt with me is because I bring belts to every set I’ve ever been on,” he explained. “They’ve seen me with a wrestling belt at some point. I have 15 belts, all different. And the reason why is I bring them on days that I either ‘don’t feel like it’ or I hit a wall where I’m like, ‘I’m tired.’”
O’Shea Jackson finds his Motivation Proclamation
“When I was doing Straight Outta Compton, I was talking to my mom and I was exhausted. It was my first time acting. [I’m] having early call times, having to bring all the emotion for 12-hour days, things like that, and I hit a wall,” he continued. “I talked to my mom and she’s like, ‘You’ve got to go.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I know.’ She’s like, ‘I’m not telling you you’ve got to go because it’s work and you have to go. You’ve got to go because you’re the champ, you gotta go!’ I took that and [thought], ‘You know what, Mom? You’re fucking right!’ She’s like, ‘Don’t cuss!’ [laughs]
Madden pointed out that sometimes, advice like that is all you need to hear to motivate you.
“So I grabbed my belt and took it to work,” Jackson said. “They’re like, ‘What’s with the belt?’ [I said] ‘I’m the champ, bro.’ So any time I hit a wall, I take a belt to work.”
O’Shea Jackson Jr. was one of the many celebrities at WWE RAW’s Netflix premiere at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. Jackson brought a Los Angeles Lakers WWE Legacy Championship to the venue, which happens to be the home of the crosstown rival Los Angeles Clippers.
Jackson’s next film, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, is in theatres on January 10, 2025.
