Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Minister of Education, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, were among the dignitaries who applauded the leadership legacy of the late doyen of accounting and co-founder of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Akintola Williams.
They commended the late Williams at the maiden memorial lecture organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria with the theme, ‘Leadership Dynamics: Current Realities and Way Forward,’ in Lagos on Wednesday.
Williams, who set up Nigeria’s first indigenous chartered accounting firm, died in September 2023.
Speaking on the leadership legacy of the late Williams, Obasanjo emphasised that it should serve as a template for contemporary Nigerian leaders.
He criticised the current state of leadership in Nigeria, decrying the lack of character, the prevalence of impunity, and the absence of accountability among today’s leaders.
“You cannot move Nigeria forward without the right leadership. What is the character of the people that we have as leaders? Let us not deceive ourselves. If we have leaders without morals and sincerity of purpose, there will be no progress,” he asserted.
Reflecting on Akintola Williams’ contributions, Obasanjo praised his pivotal role in Nigeria’s economic development through his work in the accounting profession and the establishment of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, both of which remained foundational pillars of the nation’s economy.
Ezekwesili described Williams as the epitome of professionalism, accountability, and integrity.
She called for a return to ethical leadership and urged institutions like ICAN to take a more proactive role in shaping Nigeria’s future by holding those in power accountable.
“I urge ICAN and similar institutions to be more vigilant in shaping Nigeria’s future, particularly by ensuring that those in leadership positions are held accountable,” Ezekwesili said.
In his address, the President of ICAN, Davidson Alaribe, underscored the importance of the event, noting that it was vital to honour individuals who had rendered selfless service for the benefit of others and the nation’s growth.
“Let us renew our commitment to the values Mr Williams cherished—excellence, integrity, and service. Let his life remind us of the impact one individual can have on a nation’s destiny. Let us strive to carry forward his legacy by ensuring that our profession continues to be a beacon of trust and ethical standards. As we celebrate his legacy, we are also embracing his vision and following the path he has set for us,” Alaribe said.
The son of Williams, Seni Williams, expressed gratitude for the recognition bestowed upon his father.
“It is a great honour. The love from Nigerians has been overwhelming. The large gathering here today is a testament to the impactful life he led. I urge everyone to follow his example in their respective endeavours,” he said.
Other distinguished figures at the event included the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Commissioner for Finance, Abayomi Oluyomi; former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Emeka Anyaoku; former Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, Attahiru Jega; Senator Ibikunle Amosun; and others.
