Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged leaders to give preference on the welfare of the people, particularly the vulnerable.

Obi made the call, Monday, during a sympathy visit to Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State at the Government House, Dutse, where he commiserated with the government and people over the devastating petrol tanker inferno in Majia, Taura Local Government Area.

The tragic incident, which occurred last Tuesday, claimed over 180 lives and left many injured and hospitalised within and outside the state.

The former presidential candidate who led officials of his party during the visit described the incident as “very appalling” and emphasised the importance of valuing every Nigerian life.”

The Labour Party candidate conveyed his condolences to the people of Jigawa State, acknowledging the sadness and concern felt by Nigerians nationwide.

“As Nigerians, we share in the grief of this tragic incident as the loss of over 180 lives demands serious attention from all concerned Nigerians. I felt compelled to personally offer my condolences and reassurance to the people of Jigawa State during this difficult time,” Obi said.

In his response, Governor Umar Namadi hailed Obi for the visit, saying, “Your presence here today demonstrates your commitment to the well-being of Nigerians,” adding, “your empathy and solidarity with our people in this moment of grief are truly commendable.”

Namadi continued, “Your words of encouragement and support mean a lot to us. We are grateful for your recognition of the importance of prioritising the welfare of our citizens. Your leadership and compassion are exemplary, and we hope to see more of this in our leaders.”
