Delta State Governor, Sherriff Oborevwori
Governor Sherriff Oborevwori has been urged to establish an international standard Golf and Country Club in the Osubi axis of Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State.
A renowned golfer, Elaye Youdeowei, who made the call on Thursday, said the need for a new golf club in the Osubi axis of the state has become imperative following the extinction of Warri Golf Club, whose sites were taken over by land grabbers.
He said the proposed golf club, Sheriff Oborevwori Golf & Country Club, would present a multifaceted opportunity to boost tourism, stimulate the local economy, and enhance Osubi’s socio-cultural landscape.
He said, “Ogunu has the only Golf Club in the Warri/Effurun axis, as the previous Warri Golf club situated in the Government Reservation Area was acquired by land grabbers as it was prime land. Golfers seriously fought attempts to grab the Golf courses in Sapele, Benin, and Port Harcourt.
“There had been many moves to get another Golf Course in the area. I met with a former top Army Brass in 2010 to see if the Nigerian Army Barracks in Effurun could provide land for this, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen.
“Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) also had a design for a Golf Course in Osubi, and I heard the designs were concluded. I am sure there have been other private initiatives that have helped this happen in the area.
“The Sheriff Oborevwori Golf & Country Club will represent a multifaceted opportunity to boost tourism, stimulate the local economy, and enhance the socio-cultural landscape of Osubi, Delta State.
“It will transform the region into a thriving tourism hub, benefiting the local community and visitors.
“His Excellency, it will be adorable to see you tee off at the 1st Sheriff Oborevwori Classics Tournament in the New “Sheriff Oborevwori Golf & Country Club Osubi” in May 2027, and I am sure you would have been playing single handicap then.”
