The fears of Barcelona captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen having suffered a serious knee injury during the game against Villarreal last night have been officially confirmed.

The 32-year-old superstar had to be withdrawn before half-time at Estadio de la Ceramica, as he suffered a bad injury. Ter Stegen was in pain and tears as he was stretchered off the field.

The early indications were not good and after carrying out tests today, Barcelona have announced that the goalkeeper has indeed ruptured the patella in his right knee.

“Tests carried out on the first team player, Marc-Andre ter Stegen confirm that he has a complete rupture in the patella tendon in his right knee,” the statement from the club read.

Confirming that he will undergo surgery later today, the statement added: “On Monday afternoon he will undergo a surgical process and once complete a new update will be released.”

An official timeline on his recovery is expected to be announced after he undergoes surgery but early indications are that Ter Stegen will be out for a period of eight months at the very least.

It would essentially mean that the German international will join Marc Bernal on the sidelines for the remainder of the season and will only come back in the next campaign.

Wishing Marc a speedy recovery!
