Barcelona defender Sergino Dest, currently on loan at PSV Eindhoven, has suffered a serious knee injury, the Dutch club have confirmed officially.

“Sergiño Dest suffered what appears to be a serious knee injury during Saturday’s training session,” the statement from PSV read.

“How long the winger will be sidelined is still being investigated. That it will be an extended period is almost certain.”

This comes as a blow for both Dest and Barcelona as it might hamper the club’s attempts to offload him permanently in the summer.

Dest signed for PSV on loan last year and has excelled in the Netherlands, featuring 37 times across all competitions, scoring two and assisting seven goals.

The Dutch giants have a €10 million purchase option for the full-back which they had been planning on activating at the end of the season.

But whether the supposed ‘serious’ knee injury suffered by the player derails those plans remains to be seen.

Furthermore, Dest’s former club, AFC Ajax, had also shown an interest in signing the USMNT international.

But, they might end up dropping their pursuit of the right-back if the injury sidelines him for a lengthy period, which is what PSV’s statement indicated.

Having joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2020, Dest struggled to carve out an identity for himself at the club. After two years filled with struggle, he spent a season on loan at AC Milan but things did not go well for him there either.

Finally, having joined PSV last summer, the right-back has worked his way back to his best this season. As such, this injury comes at a very unfortunate time for the defender.

Wishing Sergino Dest a speedy recovery!
