With the new season set to get underway tomorrow, FC Barcelona have made a surprise change to their coaching staff on the eve of their opening game of the campaign against Valencia.

Indeed, former midfielder Thiago Alcantara, who had joined Hansi Flick’s staff as an assistant coach on a short-term basis this summer, has been replaced by Arnau Blanco effective today.

Thiago, a former Barcelona midfielder, retired from football this summer and was brought into the Catalans’ new coaching staff to help aid Flick & co. in the early phase of the German’s tenure.

Even though it was reported that Thiago would be continuing until September, the former midfielder has stepped down today, making way for Arnau Blanco.

Blanco had been working as Barcelona’s Cadete A coach until now but has joined Hansi Flick’s staff this Friday.

The coach from Palau Solità i Plegamans, who has worked in the Barça youth system for the last 11 seasons, will have the same duties as Thiago as per the statement released by the club.

Thiago, in his short time as a coach, made a big impression on the Barcelona players, especially the young talent, but will bid goodbye today.
