Just a year after he left Manchester City for FC Barcelona, Ilkay Gundogan has now returned to the Premier League club from the Catalans, it has been officially confirmed.

“FC Barcelona and Manchester City have reached an agreement for the transfer of first team player Ilkay Gündoğan,” the club statement read.

“The club publicly expresses its gratitude to Gündoğan for his commitment and dedication and wishes him every fortune in the future, both personally and professionally.”

Having joined Barça on a free transfer, Gundogan has returned to the Etihad on a Bosman deal as well even though he still had two years left on his contract in Catalonia.

The 33-year-old was one of the best players for Barcelona in his debut season, featuring in 51 of the 53 official games they played, while contributing five goals and 14 assists.

Even though it was expected that Gundogan would have an important role under Hansi Flick this season, the club’s financial fair play situation has prompted them to offload him so as to free up some much-needed salary space.

Gundogan has signed a one-year contract with Manchester City until 2025 with an option for an additional year.

Pep Guardiola is believed to have played a crucial role in the midfielder’s return to the Etihad Stadium.

The German veteran has waived off the remainder of his contract at Barcelona while his exit is said to free up around €13-14 million in salary margin which the club plan to utilise for the registration of Dani Olmo.
