The Senator representing Ogun West Senatorial District, Solomon Adeola; the 2023 Ogun governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Oladipupo Adebutu, and the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress have joined other prominent Nigerians to mourn the demise of the House of Representatives member representing Remo federal constituency, late Adewunmi Onanuga.
Onanuga, aged 59, representing the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, died on Wednesday after a brief illness.
In a condolence message to the family of the deceased legislator on Thursday, Adeola described the late Onanuga as a competent parliamentarian who will be missed not only by her family and constituents but also by the entire people of Ogun State and Nigeria.
The Senator said, “I received the news of the passage of Hon. Onanuga with shock and sadness. She was a fearless politician and public servant that always put the interest of the people first in all political calculation.
“It is therefore not surprising that she got reelected and elected as a principal officer of the National Assembly. The nation will miss her services at this time.”
Adeola prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul and the fortitude for members of her family and associates to bear the irreparable loss of a dearly beloved lawmaker
Adebutu, in a statement on Thursday by his media aide, Afolabi Orekoya, described the lawmaker fondly called Ijaya as an exceptional leader whose dedication to public service and commitment to her people was evident in her remarkable contributions.
He emphasised that though she was on the platform of the APC, her leadership style and passion for community development left an enduring impact not just in her constituency but across Ogun State and Nigeria.
Adebutu stated, “Hon. Onanuga was a trailblazer and an inspiration to many, especially women aspiring to leadership roles.
“Her unwavering commitment to the well-being of her constituents and her ability to create meaningful change will be remembered for years to come.”
The PDP BoT member extended his sympathy to the lawmaker’s immediate family and the people of Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency, offering prayers for divine strength and comfort during this period of grief.
Similarly, Ogun APC, in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Thursday and signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Tunde Oladunjoye, described the death of the ebullient politician as a “rude shock that is too heavy for our party to bear”.
The statement read further, “Our party commiserates with the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, the leadership of the party, family and associates of late Onanuga, who remained a staunch and vibrant party loyalist till death.
“While alive, ‘Ijaya’, as she was fondly called, exuded humility, loyalty and responsibility to the party and her constituents.
“She was a commendable and recommendable politician who served as a beacon of hope not only to female party members but also to the entirety of the party.
“She was a good ambassador who represented not only her federal constituency but indeed, Ogun State as a whole, while she served as the Deputy Chief Whip at the House of Representatives.
“We pray that God will grant her family and associates the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
