Olympique Lyonnais lost to Paris Saint-Germain (2-3) last Sunday, a defeat that made Sidney Govou react. The former OL striker, now a consultant for Le Progrès, has delivered an uncompromising analysis on the tactical choices of Paulo Fonseca. For him, the Rhone coach did not find the right formula against the championship leader.
Paulo Fonseca already under fire of Govou reviews
From the start of his editorial, Sidney Govou underlines the shouting gap between the two teams. “Paris is definitely too strong”, He says, while regretting that OL has not shown any ambition in the first period. According to him, the game plan set up by Fonseca has broken the team’s offensive qualities, which has never been able to worry the Parisian defense.
“Even if Paris did not score in the first half, OL did not exist”deplores the seven -time champion of France, pointing to an overly cautious approach. For the former Lyonnais, the fear of exposing themselves against PSG led to a glaring lack of risk -taking and offensive impact.
Late but paid adjustments
In the second half, the changes made by Fonseca brought a different dynamic. With Mikaudatze's entry into play, Lyon has finally shown a more ambitious face. A start that allowed the Gones to return to the game and to worry PSG at the end of the match.
But for Govou, these adjustments arrived too late. “I am not saying that Fonseca was wrong to want to secure, but his plan was not conclusive,” he criticizes. According to him, the Lyon coach was too long in changing his approach, making his team wake up insufficient to hope for a result.
Lyon in danger for the future?
With this second defeat in four games under the Fonseca era, Sidney Govou is worried about the rest of the Lyon season. He recalls that OL, although still in the race for Europe, cannot afford to leave points on the way.
“OL has made a very poor operation with the victories of the front teams”he concludes, emphasizing the urgency for Paulo Fonseca to quickly find the right solutions to stabilize his team. A strong criticism which puts an additional pressure on the Portuguese coach, now expected at the turn.
