Olympic Swimmer Thomas Ceccon Explains Why He Was Sleeping in a Paris Park After Winning a Gold Medal

Thomas Ceccon is speaking out with his reaction to seeing a photo of himself go viral on social media.

The 23-year-old Italian swimmer, who won the gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke, was photographed sleeping on a towel in the middle of a Paris park inside the Olympic Village.

Thomas had publicly complained about the sleeping conditions inside the Olympic Village, so many felt that he was protesting the accommodations, but that isn’t true.

“Come on. Everybody sent me that photo. I’ve seen it on social media, TikTok. It was just a nap, so everybody is crazy,” Thomas told Access Hollywood.

He continued, “I just took my bike and drove through a garden and was just chilling. Then everybody sent me the photo and said, ‘What?!’ I was just taking a nap for one hour and social media explodes!”

Thomas previously noted that he failed to make the finals in the 200-meter backstroke because he was exhausted due to the sleeping conditions at the Olympics.

“There is no air conditioning in the village, it’s hot, the food is bad. Many athletes move for this reason: it’s not an alibi or an excuse, it’s the reality of what perhaps not everybody knows,” he told The Sun. “I’m disappointed that I didn’t make the final, but I was too tired. It’s hard to sleep both at night and in the afternoon. Here, I really struggle between the heat and the noise.”
