Elye Wahi is set to be an Olympique de Marseille player this season… after declaring he would never wear the OM jersey.
With the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Olympique de Marseille had to look into recruiting one or two strikers capable of statistically compensating for the impact of the Gabonese international, who scored 30 goals in 51 matches in his only season on the Canebière. One of the successors of “PEA” is known and is very close to arriving at OM.
Elye Wahi, who was on the list of attackers that interested the Olympique staff in recent days, will in all likelihood wear the Marseille jersey this season according to L’Equipe, which announces that Olympique de Marseille and Racing Club de Lens have reached an agreement for a transfer valued at 25 million euros + 5 million in bonuses to be unlocked later. On the Foot Mercato side, it is simply indicated that the positions have become much closer between the two clubs, but that there is no official agreement yet.
He said he would never play for OM!
Recruited for 30 million euros from Montpellier a little over a year ago, the 21-year-old player had an up-and-down season in the North, with 12 goals scored in 36 appearances in all competitions, while gradually being taken aback by the Blood and Gold supporters. In search of cash after failing in its attempt to qualify again for the Champions League, a competition in which Elye Wahi had scored two goals, RCL resigned itself to not making any capital gains on the Courcouronnes native.
If this is confirmed, Wahi’s arrival at OM will also take place in a somewhat unusual climate in terms of the welcome he receives from the supporters. In addition to having been a fan of Paris Saint-Germain in his youth – which did not prevent some players who later played for OM from having a great career there – these are comments made a few years ago that he is likely to be criticized for. When he wore the MHSC jersey, Elye Wahi was asked on France Bleu Hérault which French club he would never wear the jersey of. His answer:
“Marseille. That’s a certainty. I’m a Paris fan.”
Elye Wahi therefore has an interest in performing quickly with Olympique de Marseille…
