Om Puri’s First Wife Reveals Leaving Him While Pregnant Due To His Affair; Recalls Actor Sending Rs 25,000 Post Their Child’s Death

Actor Om Puri is a well know actor across the globe who starred in a number of films such as Arohan, Ardh Satya, Hera Pheri, Chachi 420, East Is East and more. The actor – who passed away on January 6, 2017 at age 66 after suffering a heart attack at his residence in Andheri, Mumbai, was married twice – first to writer-director Seema Kapoor, the sister of actor Annu Kapoor and then to journalist Nandita Puri. His first marriage ended after eight months owing to Om’s affair with Nandita. He married Nandita in 1993 but opted for a judicial separation in 2013 after Nandita accused him of domestic violence

Now, during a recent conversation, Seema opened up about Om meeting Nandita while working on City of Joy, how their affair affected their marriage, divorce and more. She also opened up about Puri not being by her side when their child passed away but sending her Rs 25,000 through a secretary as compensation. Read on to know all she said.

Om Puri’s First Wife Seema Kapoor On Leaving Him

While interacting with Siddharth Kannan, Seema Kapoor recalled how Om Puri and Nandita’s affair changed everything in her and Puri’s marriage. Adding that her friend, Renu knew about the affair but thought it was just a phase, Seema said, “Everything was going fine after our marriage, but that movie turned my life upside down… My good friend Renu Saluja – Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s first wife, knew about the affair. But she and Sudhir Mishra and everyone else chalked it down to a phase. They felt that he’d get back to normal after the film. I found out about the affair much later when I was in Delhi. He called me up and told me that he was seeing someone else, and my friends said that he was just seeking attention.”

Talking about their divorce, Seema stated that she could tell from Om’s voice that he was serious about wanting a divorce. She continued, “I returned to Mumbai, and everything felt normal. He left the city for a shoot soon afterwards, and while sifting through his stuff, I discovered love letters. I was shattered;I never wanted to divorce him, despite the affair. I wanted to mend things because I was pregnant. He knew I was pregnant, but this was a source of insecurity for Nandita. She’d call him up in front of me.”

Seema: I was three months pregnant

Adding that she now knows Om Puri wanted a reason to end their marriage, Seema Kapoor said, “But things became overwhelming; Puri sahab would drink too much, and Nandita would make a scene. One night, I decided to leave. I was three months pregnant.”

During the same conversation, Seema added that her brother, actor Annu Kapoor, was extremely upset and wanted to take Om Puri to court. While she received Rs 6 lakh as alimony, Seema refused to take the Rs 25,000 Om sent after their child died. She recalled, “Forget consoling me. He sent Rs 25,000 via his secretary. I turned it down, and his secretary told me, ‘This ego is what is destroying you.’ But what he thought was ego was just self-respect.”

As per several reports, Om Puri called up Seema and apologised to her during his last days.
