This evening, Olympique de Marseille faces Rennes at Roazhon Park for a decisive Ligue 1 match. For the occasion, Roberto De Zerbi opted for a 3-4-3 system, a daring tactical choice in the hope of bring back the three points.

A revamped OM defense, Murillo starting

The absence of injured Geoffrey Kondogbia, Amin Harit and Elye Wahi forced the Italian coach to reorganize his squad. In defense, Murillo is established on the right side, a novelty which shows De Zerbi’s desire to bring freshness to this sector. Alongside Murillo, we find Cornelius, Balerdi and Merlin, the latter occupying the left flank of the device. In goal, Rulli retains his place and will have the mission of securing the rearguard against a Rennes team renowned for its offensive efficiency.

Højbjerg finds his place in the middle

One of the main novelties of this starting XI is the return of Pierre-Emile Højbjerg to the midfield. Sick during the previous match against Le Havre, the Dane regains a starting place and will form a central duo with Valentin Rongier, a veritable metronome of the Marseille midfield. On the wings, Luis Henrique is kept in the right lane, while Merlin, aligned on the left, will be responsible for providing percussion and crosses for the attackers.

Maupay, Greenwood and Rabiot in attack

In attack, De Zerbi remains faithful to his strong men. Maupay and Greenwood, essential, will be accompanied by Rabiot, positioned in an advanced role. This offensive association, which combines speed, technique and power, could pose serious problems for the Rennes defense.

Despite some adjustments linked to absences, this starting eleven remains generally classic, with coherent choices. If the 3-4-3 is a new thing, OM retains a solid spine, supported by its executives. It remains to be seen whether this tactical innovation will bear fruit against Rennes, in Roazhon Park where the Marseillais will have a lot to do.
