Manchester United bought a private jet to take André Onana to the African Cup of Nations, but the goalkeeper still missed his appointment.

Onana was absent for Monday’s draw against Guinea, although United spent at least $100,000 on a private jet to fly the goalkeeper to Ivory Coast as late as possible, according to The Athletic. The goalkeeper flew out after the Premier League draw against Tottenham and was expected to play in Cameroon’s opening match, but was ultimately left out. Onana was left furious at his omission after arriving in time for the match despite his flight being delayed. “ If I wasn’t going to play or be part of the team, why did I come here on a private jet? » he asked El Hadji Diouf.

Onana seriously accused

It’s still not entirely clear why Onana was left out of the match. The goalkeeper was expected to arrive late for the competition after a deal was reached for him to play against Spurs. Onana’s flight was then diverted from the capital Yamoussoukro, where the match was taking place, to land in Abidjan. Due to fog, he had to complete his journey by car. He arrived five hours before kick-off, but was not made the squad for the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw for Cameroon. Former Arsenal and Man City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has since accused Onana of “disrespecting” Cameroon by arriving late.

Onana spoke on Canal TV about these criticisms : “I have a lot of things to say, but I won’t say them here because we are in competition. The most important thing is sacred union. We are here to win CAN 2023. I am one of the leaders, so I take my responsibilities and that is why I am herei,” he continued. “I don’t want people to criticize younger people. I am used to this, I do what is good for my country. It’s like choosing between my father and my mother, but my country comes first, that’s why I’m here. We are together. »
