Olugbenga Edema, a former APC governorship aspirant, has been selected as the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) candidate for the November 16 governorship election in Ondo State.

Daily Trust reports that Edema lost the APC primary to incumbent Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and protested the process.

However, on Wednesday, Edema emerged as the NNPP candidate at the party’s substituted primary in Akure following the withdrawal of the former candidate, Oluwatosin Ayeni, who stepped aside.

The state chairman of the NNPP, Peter Olagookun, endorsed Ayeni’s withdrawal, supporting Edema as the stronger candidate.

Edema criticised the APC for lacking internal democracy and cited this as his reason for joining the NNPP. He declared, “The APC primary was undemocratic and marked by impunity. I cannot support such a process.”

Predicting the APC’s downfall, Edema announced his resignation from the party and his alignment with the NNPP, which he described as a truly progressive and people-oriented party.
