A socio-economic group of Ondo indigenes, The Ekimogun Roundtable, has appealed to the Federal Government and the Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, to address the devastating flooding that has been claiming lives and properties in Ondo town.
The group stated that the flooding in the town has reached emergency levels, claiming lives and valuable property each year, while those still alive live in constant fear.
In a statement on Saturday, signed by its Acting Secretary, Christiana Ayodele, the group called on relevant Federal Government agencies, including the Ecological Fund Office and the National Emergency Management Agency, as well as the state government, to urgently assess the situation and provide a permanent solution.
The statement read, “The flooding, which started around Ife Road, Saluwa, Sabo, New Town, Itanla, Oke Odunwo, and Orimolade areas of the town, is now engulfing the entire Ondo City. It is no longer just a seasonal issue but a crisis that endangers our lives, disrupts education, threatens livelihoods, and leaves lasting scars on our people and the community.
“We believe that this issue can be resolved with coordinated efforts and political will before more lives are put at risk.
“As a people and a community, we have done our best to address this situation, but we are now stretched beyond our limit. We stand ready to collaborate with government authorities at all levels to develop a comprehensive flood management plan and ensure that our community is protected from further harm.
“We demand action for the sake of our families, businesses, and future.”
