A fatal crash occurred on Saturday at 2:58pm around Saapade on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, resulting in one death, while 10 others were seriously injured.
The accident involved a white Mazda bus with number plate GGE 858 XY, which was reportedly speeding when one of its tyres burst, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle subsequently somersaulted.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Florence Okpe, confirmed the incident in a statement.
She noted that the injured victims were taken to the Patmag Hospital in Ogere for medical treatment, while the deceased’s body was deposited at FOS Morgue, Ipara, Remo.
The statement read, “A total of 17 people were involved in the accident, comprising eight male adults, seven female adults, one female child, and one male child.
“Unfortunately, one female adult lost her life, while 10 others comprising two male adults, six female adults, one male child, and one female child sustained serious injuries.”
Okpe further explained that the causes of the crash were excessive speed, a tyre burst, and subsequent loss of control.
In response, the Ogun State FRSC Sector Commander, Akinwumi Fasakin, urged motorists to prioritise tyre maintenance by regularly checking expiration dates, and tyre tread, and avoiding substandard tyres.
Fasakin emphasised that a tyre burst at a controlled speed would likely have been more manageable.
