One dead, two injured in Ogun auto crash

A 38-year-old employee of Sonia Company, identified as Mariam Olatuga, has lost her life in a tragic accident on Ogijo Road, Sotubo, in the Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The Ogun State Police Command spokesman, SP Omolola Odutola, in a statement, on Wednesday, stated that the accident occurred around 2:40 p.m. and involved a TVS motorcycle with registration number SUA 148 VH and an ash-coloured Toyota Camry with registration number MUS 808 JA.

According to Odutola, the incident happened when the motorcycle rider, carrying two passengers, failed to check for oncoming vehicles while attempting to cross the road.

The speeding Toyota Camry struck the motorcycle, resulting in the fatal collision.

Mariam succumbed to her injuries, while the motorcycle rider and the second passenger sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

“A fatal road accident involving one Ash-coloured Toyota Camry car with registration number MUS 808 JA, driven by one Babatunde Solomon ‘m’, aged 30 years old, and one TVS Motorcycle with registration number SUA 148 VH ridden by one Ebenezer Joshua ‘m’ with two passengers, workers of Sonia company, namely one Odujobi Damilola ‘f’ and one Mariam Olatuga ‘f’ aged 38 years.”

“Occurred when the said rider of the TVS Motorcycle crossed the road without looking, and in the process, the said Toyota Camry while speeding, knocked them down. As a result of the impact, the rider and the two passengers sustained serious injuries all over their bodies”, Odutola said.

She added that the injured victims were rushed to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, where Mariam Olatuga was then confirmed dead on arrival.

“They were immediately rushed to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital Sagamu for urgent medical treatment and on arrival, Mariam Olatuga was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty while the driver and other passenger were responding to treatment. Her corpse has been deposited at the same hospital for preservation and autopsy.”

Odutola further disclosed that the Police have commenced an investigation, and have recovered the damaged vehicle and motorcycle for inspection.

“The scene has been visited and photographs taken. The damaged vehicle and motorcycle were recovered at the station for safety and VIO inspection. An investigation has commenced, and further development will be communicated.”

PUNCH Online earlier reported that one yet-to-be-identified male adult lost his life while seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries in an accident along the Abeokuta Sagamu Expressway on December 30, 2024.

According to a traffic update by the Commandant General of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Seni Ogunyemi, he stated that the accident occurred after the vehicle conveying the victims had a burst tyre.
