The Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association has conducted a training program for its members to enhance their understanding of military protocols and ethics.

This came as they were cautioned against abusing soldiers or assigning them demeaning tasks, such as carrying handbags or accompanying them to markets in uniform.

The training according to the DEPOWA president Oghogho Musa, was to prevent breaches at barracks, functions and foster better relationships.

Speaking in Abuja on Friday, Musa, emphasised the importance of emotional intelligence in managing personal and professional interactions.

Musa stated, “If we understand ourselves emotionally, we’ll know how to talk, how to react, especially in public, and avoid misunderstandings and disorderliness.

“The armed forces are about orderliness and protocol. Understanding these principles helps us relate better, know our roles, and avoid infringing on others’ rights or creating unnecessary conflicts.”

Musa added that the initiative aligns with DEPOWA’s 2025 goals, focusing on emotional intelligence as a critical factor for personal growth and community harmony.

“By becoming more self-aware and managing our emotions effectively, we contribute to growth in our homes and society while fostering positive mindsets toward life’s challenges,” she noted.

In her lecture, titled, ” Protocols for Military Spouses and DEPOWA Members”, Victoria Irabor, the immediate past DEPOWA president, reminded members of the ethical standards expected of them.

She cautioned members against abusing soldiers or assigning them demeaning tasks, such as carrying handbags or accompanying them to markets in uniform.

” Orderlies are designated for protection and official duties, not for personal errands,” she said.

Irabor also urged the military and police officers’ wives to always maintain the integrity of their husbands’ profession.

“As military wives, we must uphold the highest standards of behavior to maintain the integrity and respect of the armed forces. Misuse of privileges or soldiers tarnishes the image of the institution,” she said.
