Victor Osimhen has hailed Galatasaray fans following their emphatic Turkish Super Lig Istanbul derby 3-1 at Fenerbahce on Saturday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Osimhen missed Galatasaray Wednesday’s win over Gaziantep but returned to action in the mouth-watering derby clash with Jose Mourinho’s side at the Ulker Stadyumu Fenerbahce Sukru Saracoglu Spor Kompleksi.
Despite not getting on the score sheet, the Nigerian laid the assist that gave his side the two-goal cushion as the Lions ran out with the victory, courtesy of goals from Gabriel Sara, Dries Mertens, and an own goal from Dominik Livakovic.
Osimhen, who was quite impressive, thanked Galatasaray fans for their relentless support in a post on social media after the game.
“Yesterday’s (Saturday) win wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of Galatasaray fans around the world. Your cheers gave us the strength to fight,” Osimhen said, per Fanatik.
“You are not just fans in the stands; you are a big part of this team. Thank you for believing in us. We walk together.”
The game between the two title contenders is considered one of the biggest derbies in the world, with a combined 43 Super Lig titles won by the neighbours.
Galatasaray won the Super Lig last season with a massive 102 points, just three more than Fenerbahce.
Before Saturday’s game, the champions led Fenerbahce by five points after five matches into the campaign. Mourinho had hoped to close the gap on the champions, but the home team suffered a defeat that extended the gap to eight points.
After providing two crucial assists in as many games following his loan arrival at the club from Napoli earlier this month, Osimhen will look to get his first goal for Galatasaray when they take on PAOK in a Europa League game on Wednesday.
