Abia State Governor Alex Otti has, through the state Ministry of Education, approved funds as running costs for heads of institutions in the state.

Briefing newsmen in Umuahia Monday on the outcome of the week’s Executive Council meeting chaired by the state governor, the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, said, “In continuation of the reforms in the education sector, the state government has, through the Ministry of Education, obtained approval from Governor Alex Otti to provide funds, running costs for the office of heads of schools in the state.

“Before now, we are used to hearing stories of illegal collections of fees and so on, occasioned, maybe by pressure on the heads of institutions. So, the state government has gone ahead to ensure that this becomes history by providing funds for heads of schools in secondary and primary institutions across the state.”

The Commissioner also disclosed that the European Union has accommodated Abia as a pilot state for solar illumination of Abia health institutions.

Kanu said, “The Light Up Abia of the state government is already bearing positive fruits. Abia State, through its achievements in this regard, has been scheduled as one of the 5 states to benefit from Nigeria’s Solar-for-Health project, an EU-sponsored initiative.

“The project is targeted at providing solar power for state-owned Health Institutions. The state government will provide counterpart funding to the tune of 30% while the EU will provide 70%”.

The Commissioner further disclosed that the state government, through the state Ministry of Works, have completed 124 roads across the state, principally at Aba and Umuahia.

“In line with the zero pothole policy of the state government, the Ministry of Works has continued to deliver on the initiative across the length and breadth of the state, with the principal focus on Aba and Umuahia. Within 4 to 5 weeks, Ndoki (in Ukwa East) road will be commissioned,” Kanu added.
