Jamie Carragher was left impressed by Jonny Evans’ solid display at the back against Aston Villa.
The 36-year-old was a surprise inclusion in Manchester United’s starting line-up as he started alongside Harry Maguire in the heart of defence.
That meant both Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt were dropped to the bench for the trip to Villa Park.
Both sides failed to create anything of note with just two shots on target combined. The best chance came from a Bruno Fernandes free-kick in the second half.
One player caught Carragher’s eye on commentary.
Speaking to Sky Sports’ audience during the match, Carragher waxed lyrical about Evans, who he gave the Man of the Match award to.
“Jonny Evans has been outstanding. A lot of eyebrows raised when the team news came out today but he’s just stopped a really dangerous attack from Villa.”
Evans played the full match against Villa, making three clearances and blocking one shot. The centre-back made a total of four tackles – winning 6 ground duels as well as all (5) of his aerial duels.
