Selena Gomez is still being the most honest about mental health.

In honor of this year’s World Mental Health Day, the Wizards of Waverly Place alum spoke candidly about her own journey in a candid Q&A with influencer Remi Bader on Wednesday. In the Instagram video, Remi starts off by asking the Wolves singer whether she thinks social media is a negative or positive place in terms of mental health as a public figure. Selena responds:

“Well I think it depends on how you use it. I think it’s important for reasons I won’t go into, but it’s really helped people.”

But it can hurt people, too. Selena adds:

“And then there’s the negative side of it, where maybe you’re just getting too much of what you don’t need to see that’s not fueling your soul, so it’s important to make sure you time it.”

Putting a limit on it is a great idea! She elaborated:

“I’ll take a few days off, and then it’s also important to try to create and follow accounts that will bring in fresh content that you actually need. I love quotes … I’m like, ‘This is something that I needed to hear today.’”

Taking social media breaks can definitely be a helpful thing to do every now and then to refresh your mind! Selena is the queen of social media breaks!

Remi then asks Selena about something she’s dealing with mentally that she thinks would be relatable for others to hear. And the Only Murders in the Building star admits she’s currently feeling a bit “overwhelmed” amid her busy work schedule:

“Honestly, I think a lot of work has been happening right now, so I’ve been very grateful but just a little overwhelmed. And I like to take some me-time — I think it’s very important — where I don’t speak to anyone and just support myself.”

Good for her! Everyone needs a bit of the ol’ me-time to ease the mind!

As for what she does when she’s having a poor mental health day? The Calm Down singer reveals:

“I have to surround myself with people that I really trust, and usually that’s one or two people. Sometimes isolating myself when I’m not feeling great can be scary. I can think all these thoughts, but if I’m around people that make me feel good and make me feel like I can say anything, that always helps me. And then therapy, you know. But I don’t want to call my therapist too much. It’s like, a lot.”

There’s definitely a difference between me-time and isolation, and that’s clearly what Selena is trying to get across here. It’s always important to recognize when you need help and when you just need someone you feel comfortable sharing with! And for Selena, one of those people is her little sister Gracie. She tells Remi:

“I mean, I’m fortunate enough to say I have quite a few people. If it’s something I just want simplified, I love talking to my sister. She’s 11, and she actually is very sweet and innocent and she makes me feel very grounded.”

That’s so cute! Selena also has been vocal about feeling “so safe and secure” with her boyfriend Benny Blanco.

Finally, the Emilia Pérez star ended off by giving some advice to anyone who’s currently struggling with their mental health:

“I would say that you’re definitely not alone. I think right now we’re unfortunately in very dark times, and I would hope that you find a place and a person. If you need to contact someone, I would highly suggest you seek help. Even if you want to get your story off your chest, talking about it in a video diary or with other people sharing might help. And I’m with you. So I feel that feeling.”

Such important words! You can watch her full video (below):

We hope Selena is using her tools to help herself come down from that “overwhelmed” feeling as much as possible amid her busy work schedule. Mental health is so important, and the world is lucky to have such a public figure speak so openly about it!
