Owen Hargreaves finds 3 frustrations Ruben Amorim will have after first Manchester United performance

Owen Hargreaves provided an analysis of Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Sunday.

The result was disappointing but the performance was to be expected with the same squad of players at the head coach’s disposal.

It was Ruben Amorim’s first game in charge of United and we were fully expected to secure three points. The Tractor Boys have struggled in the top flight and they look like a side that will be relegation contenders come the end of the season if you exclude a handful of decent performances.

They were arguably the better side on Sunday. United took the lead after two minutes through Marcus Rashford but failed to keep their lead and conceded before the break.

There weren’t many highlights from United’s perspective. The goal came from a stunning Amad Diallo solo run and Andre Onana pulled off two fine saves to deny Liam Delap in both halves.

United dominated in phases of the second half but nowhere near enough to win the match. They struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, and it felt like Ipswich would most likely to find the winner.

It would be harsh to criticise Amorim for this since he has only had a few days of training with his new players due to international duty commitments. When he first arrived at the club, a lot of the squad was away on international duty or in Rashford’s case, on a break in New York.

Former United midfielder Hargreaves wasn’t impressed by the United players on Sunday. He sounded like someone who expected better, but they were expected to beat Ipswich at the very least.

Hargreaves also noticed that Amorim wasn’t best pleased with three players during the game.

Diogo Dalot had to adjust back to playing a full-back role rather than as an inverted midfielder. Meanwhile, Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund were two disappointing substitutions.

“He was pretty frustrated, I’m not gonna live, he was right in front of me and he was really frustrated with a lot of things,” Hargreaves said on Premier League Productions, as quoted by UtdDistrict.

“I think initially, Dalot’s positioning, he was a little bit frustrated with that in the first half. I think the midfield balance he didn’t really like.

“And when Zirkzee came on I don’t think he was overly happy with his positioning, and Højlund as well, so I think there’s a lot of stuff that needs a little bit of work.

“Before the game we saw all of those smiles and all that charm from Ruben Amorim but during the game he was really frustrated.

“I think he realised this is going to be a lot harder than he probably envisioned.”
