Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde
The Oyo State Government and various stakeholders, on Tuesday, called for the swift passage of the National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill to promote accountability and transparency in governance.
Gathering in Ibadan, the state capital, the stakeholders stressed that the Bill’s enactment would streamline government activities and enhance engagement between the government and its citizens.
This position was echoed during a stakeholders’ engagement on the National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill held in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
Speaking at the event, the Minister for Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Olatubosun Tijani, represented by Banke Ajagunna, highlighted the critical importance of the Bill.
He said, “The consultative engagement is taking place across all states of the Federation to incorporate stakeholder input into the Bill.
“The National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill, 2024, represents a significant step forward in Nigeria’s digital transformation journey. This Bill aims to foster economic growth through digital technology, enhance public service delivery, and create a competitive environment for the Nigerian digital economy.”
Tijani explained that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Communications, proposed the Bill to accelerate Nigeria’s transition into a smart nation.
The Minister noted that the Bill offers substantial opportunities for businesses to innovate and grow, backed by improved digital infrastructure and a supportive regulatory framework. Additionally, it would provide individuals with better access to digital services and improved governance through e-governance initiatives.
He said, “The Bill will drive the digital transformation of government services, making them more transparent, accessible, and responsive to citizens. It also aims to ensure digital access for all by promoting infrastructure development and digital literacy programmes, thereby extending digital services to underserved regions of Nigeria.”
Earlier, Bayo Akande, Senior Special Adviser on ICT and E-Governance to Governor Seyi Makinde, commended the
Federal Government’s efforts with the Bill.
He stated, “Despite advancements in technology, Nigeria’s digital economy still faces critical challenges. The country lags behind others with robust e-governance frameworks that empower citizens and safeguard consumer data.
Without timely intervention, Nigeria risks missing out on economic opportunities in an increasingly digital world.
“Oyo State has already begun introducing digital methods in governance, including the recent deployment of Business Process Automation to make government services paperless. However, this Bill represents a significant step in the right direction.”
