Patrick Mahomes Explains Why Chiefs Teammate Travis Kelce Has Been Struggling So Far This NFL Season

Travis Kelce isn’t having the best NFL season so far this year.

The 34-year-old tight end once again continued to struggle to get touches during the Kansas City Chiefs’ game third game of the season on Sunday (Sept. 22) against the Atlanta Falcons.

After the game, quarterback Patrick Mahomes weighed in on Travis‘ performance so far this season.

Keep reading to find out more…“It’s crazy because the respect factor teams have for Travis is unreal, and it’s well-deserved,” Patrick, 29, said during media availability. “We’re calling a lot of plays for Travis and it’s like two or three [defenders] are going to him. That’s the great thing about him is he wants to make an impact on the game but he wants to win at the end of the day.”

Patrick continued, “I’m going to do my best to keep feeding him the ball whenever he’s there, whenever he’s open. I think the more Rashee [Rice] makes plays, the more we’re able to run the football, the more we can get [Xavier] Worthy involved, I think that’s going to open Travis up more. People are really emphasizing taking him away and that’s getting other guys open.”

Despite Travis‘ struggling performance, the Chiefs are currently undefeated this season, winning all three of their games so far.

On last week’s episode of his New Heights podcast with brother Jason Kelce, Travis said that’s learned not to stress about underwhelming performances in early season games.

“I used to get really, really pissed off and almost lose my cool a lot of the time from not having that success knowing that I demand that out of myself and I just like to play the game to such a high level of accountability that it’s just tough for me to deal with being mediocre or having stats that represent that,” Travis said.

“For whatever reason, these past two games it hasn’t gone that way for me and that’s football, man,” he added. “I’m not about to sit here and get frustrated about it.”

Despite his recent comments, Travis caught on cameras during the Falcons looking rather downcast and at one point, he sat on the sidelines with his head down and rubbed his eyes.

If you missed it, Travis‘ mom and Taylor Swift‘s mom shared a sweet moment at last weekend’s game.
