If you were unaware, the 60-year-old actor won an Oscar for his portrayal of Maximus in the 2000 blockbuster directed by Ridley Scott. However, he is not one of the original cast members Ridley, 86, brought back for the sequel, which stars Paul, 28, as Lucius.

In a new interview, Paul revealed why he decided not to reach out to Russell while preparing for the role.

Keep reading to find out more…“Ultimately, I have to stand behind this entirely by myself,” Paul told Extra. “There is no excuse. You can’t rely on anyone besides the script and the director and yourself.”

Ridley added, “I’ll add to that. Why would Roger Moore call up Sean Connery [for a James Bond movie]…What’s he gonna do that for?”

Paul went on to say that he would like to talk to Russell now that production is over.

“What I would love to discuss with Russell is, like… trade war stories,” Paul said. “We’ve gone through similar experiences with it.”

Earlier this year, Russell explained why he was “uncomfortable” with the movie being made.
