Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team have suffered a blow after Paul Mitchell turned down a recruitment role at the club.
Dan Ashworth, Newcastle United’s sporting director, is expected to move to the Red Devils to work under Omar Berrada, who joins from Manchester City as CEO.
INEOS are quickly revamping the structure at Old Trafford, despite the fact their deal for 25% of the club is awaiting completion.
While Ashworth would be a significant coup, INEOS want another figure below him to focus solely on recruitment.
United have squandered cash since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013 and they have the most expensive squad in the world.
Mitchell’s body of work is impressive, with the Englishman working wonders at Tottenham and Southampton during his time in England.
He signed the likes of Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk for the Saints, while Son Heung-Min, Dele Alli and Toby Alderweireld were recruited at Spurs.
The 42-year-old left Monaco last year and it was thought he would return to the UK.
However, the Athletic say Mitchell has informed United that he is not interested in taking up a role at the club.
He is said to want to pursue other opportunities, that may not necessarily be defined just by recruitment.
It’s a blow for INEOS, who must now seek another figure to handle recruitment.
Julian Ward, the former Liverpool sporting director, is a candidate.
