A colourful ceremony has been held to elevate the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), Victory Preaching Point in Upper Weija, a suburb of Accra, to a congregational status.
The elevation ushers in a new era for the largely youthful church to function as a fully-fledged one, while conferring on it all privileges and responsibilities expected of all congregations under the PCG.
The occasion which brought together the top echelon of leadership of the New-Gbawe District within which the church is sited, also saw the introduction of newly elected presbyters to serve a four-year tenure.
Delivering a sermon on the theme; ‘The Cost of Discipleship,’ the District Minister, Reverend Kwadwo Owusu Sarpong, reminded Christians of the need to live up to expectations “if we are to build a transformational society and gain heavenly reward.”
He said being a true follower of Jesus Christ placed a huge responsibility on Christians which required consistency in the faith and truthfulness to be able to “bear the cross.”
Making reference to Amos 7:7- 15 and Mark 6:14-29, Rev. Sarpong challenged Christians to be bold and courageous in speaking truth to power as the Holy Spirit led them.
“We have lot of rot going on in the country, in our congregations and societies yet pastors cannot speak, Christians have kept their mouth shut. We cannot speak against ills, we are massaging the truth because we are being overprotective of our image, what we will get into our pockets and other personal interests.”
According to the District Minister, pastors, Christian leaders and members at large represented the voice of conscience in present-day and they must rise up to the challenge, cautioning “if we keep quiet God will ask us.”
“Be fearless in proclaiming the truth as God has given you and also be ready to suffer for it. This is the cost we must bear like John the Baptist did even to the point of death, to get the crown of glory,” he charged.
Rev. Sarpong while congratulating the Victory Congregation on the milestone achieved implored them to forge ahead in love, unity and a great sense of commitment.
The Agent in-charge of the Victory Congregation, Catechist Eric Osei Yeboah, expressed thanks to God, while paying glowing tribute to his predecessors for laying a solid foundation for the success of the church.
He reminded members however of the responsibility bestowed on them by their new status, pleading with them to “to get involved to make Victory Congregation a beacon in the New Gbawe District.”
“Your support in finances, service and prayers are highly welcome and will be very much appreciated as we journey on,” he stated.
Established in August 2011, the Victory Congregation has gone through series of transformation in terms of leadership, infrastructure, and membership among others, to its present state.
For instance, from its first place of worship in a rented stall, to the compound of a benevolent member’s house, the church now worships on its own acquired piece of land with a beautifully erected church building
