The Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, has accused Governor Monday Okpebholo of sliding into dictatorship, following the controversial impeachment of Oredo Local Government Chairman, Dr. Tom Obaseki.

In a press briefing held in Benin on Friday, Aziegbemi described the impeachment as a farce, orchestrated by what he called “impostors” who had no legitimate role in the council’s election process.

“The impeachment of Dr. Obaseki is nothing short of a coup d’état. How can the governor allow individuals who never participated in the election process and have no certificates of return to just gather in a room and claim to have impeached an elected official?” Aziegbemi questioned.

He expressed concern over the silence surrounding the incident and accused the state’s traditional rulers, opinion leaders, and religious figures of neglecting their duties.

“If they think this is just politics, they are mistaken. Eventually, the consequences will affect everyone,” he warned.

Aziegbemi called on President Bola Tinubu, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and the Director-General of the State Security Service (DG SSS) to intervene urgently in the matter.

“This issue must be addressed now, before it escalates further,” he stressed.

When contacted, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, declined to comment on the accusations.
