The National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, South-West Zone, Lukman Ajisafe, has stated that the crisis affecting the party’s national leadership will not hinder its victory in the November 16 governorship election in Ondo.
Ajisafe, who made the statement during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Lagos, said that the prospects of PDP’s candidate, Mr Agboola Ajayi, in the election remain strong.
He assured that the leadership crisis would soon be resolved, adding that Nigerians still have great confidence in the party.
Ajisafe said many Nigerians, especially voters in Ondo, had expressed confidence in the PDP to improve their situation, citing what he described as the non-performance of the APC.
“Our prospects are promising. I can inform you that politicians are actually joining our party from other political parties to demonstrate their desire to see the PDP return to power.
“PDP will surely win this election, and we are quite hopeful due to the support expressed by the people.
“We call on INEC and the security agencies to be neutral and ensure fair play in the interest of the country and posterity,” he said.
The PDP chieftain urged the National Assembly to amend the electoral law to allow for the electronic transmission of all election results from polling units.
“With the electronic transmission of results, we will no longer need collation centres, and that will reduce the level of manipulation we have witnessed in previous elections,” he said.
Regarding the national leadership crisis facing the PDP, Ajisafe described the emergence of factional groups within the National Working Committee as a result of misunderstanding rather than a sign of a major crisis.
“We are doing everything possible to ensure this issue does not affect us in the forthcoming Ondo election,” he said.
NAN gathered that 18 political parties are fielding candidates for the November 16 governorship election.
