Ari Aster, the visionary filmmaker behind horror pics Hereditary and Midsommar and last year’s darkly comic Beau Is Afraid, has locked in his starriest cast yet for his next A24 film, Eddington. Actors set to join the previously announced Joaquin Phoenix include Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us), Emma Stone (fresh off her second Oscar win for Poor Things), Luke Grimes (Yellowstone), Dune: Part Two‘s Austin Butler, Deirdre O’Connell (Outer Range), Micheal Ward (Top Boy), and Clifton Collins Jr. (Jockey).

Plot details are under wraps, though the project has been discussed as a Western. Aster will direct from his own script and produce alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Darius Khondji, the Academy Award-winning cinematographer behind Bardo and Uncut Gems, is also aboard the project for his first collaboration with Aster. Production on the film kicks off this week.

Aster first collaborated with Phoenix on last year’s surreal horror comedy Beau Is Afraid, a polarizing work that earned the actor a Golden Globe nomination, even while underperforming at the box office. Prior to that, he helmed the brutal Swedish cult horror Midsommar, starring Florence Pugh, having broken out with 2018’s Hereditary, starring Toni Collette. Launching out of Sundance, that supernatural horror pic was hugely acclaimed and grossed over $82MM, holding the record for A24’s highest-grossing film up until the multiple Oscar winner Everything Everywhere All at Once came along.

In addition to these works, Aster and Knudsen have teamed with A24 on the dark comedy Dream Scenario, marking the English-language debut of renowned Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli, which brought Cage a Golden Globe nomination, as well as Death of a Unicorne, a dark comedy starring Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega, Richard E. Grant and more that shot with an interim agreement last summer and has not yet been dated for release.
