The Church of Pentecost Windy Hill District of Kasoa in the Central Region on Sunday held a retirement service in honour of four of their Elders who have served in the capacity for various years.

Among them was the retired former Deputy Editor of The Spectator, one of the products of the New Times Corporation, Elder John Ackom-Asante.

He has been a member of the church for 46 years and an Elder for 26 years.

Sporting a dark suit and accompanied by his wife, Christiana, a lawyer and Deaconess, Elder Ackom-Asante stepped on the podium to receive his Certificate of Service and a citation embossed with his portrait, attracting a resounding applause from the congregation.

The citation expressed the gratitude of the church for his impactful leadership on the “church, the community and the society as large.”

Similar recognition was given to the other elders for their contribution to the development of the church.

The citations also read “Your selfless service, zeal, willingness to relate wholeheartedly and your desire to effect change has gone a long way to shape the lives of many people in the church and the nation over the 46 years of your dedication to the service of the Lord.”

Mr Ackom-Asante was baptised at the Darkuman Central Assembly in 1979 by late Pastor, S.A. Tetteh, the then Kaneshie District Pastor and ordained as an Elder in 1997 by the late Apostle J.B. Archer, then Kaneshie Area Head.

Elder Ackom- Asante held many positions at the Darkuman Central Assembly, Obuasi in the Ashanti Region and Tema, serving in various capacity as youth and evangelism ministry leader and marriage counsellor.

He was the founding member of the Darkuman Christian Fellowship, a member of the Greater Accra Christian Fellowship; member of Bible Society of Ghana; founding member Obuasi Chapter Full Gospel Businessmen Fellowship International and founding member of New Times Corporation, Christian Fellowship and Chaplain, Methodist University Tema Campus 2009- 2010.

As a professional journalist, Elder Ackom-Asante combined effectively and efficiently his duty as a member and elder of the church and the demands of his profession, with admiration from the church, until his retirement in December 15, 2024.

Though, officially on retirement as Elder, at age 66, Ackom-Asante, a workaholic, promised to stay in the background to render more service to God and humankind as far as his strength allows him.
